Course description
Do you struggle to write that perfect sentence or that flawless paragraph? Can’t make your text flow even though you’ve revised it countless times? Wonder why your text is flat, unappealing or rambling? Scientific Writing teaches you to tackle these problems and to write a structured and coherent academic text through lectures, in-class exercises, class discussion and detailed instructor feedback on your texts.
Course objectives:
- learn how to write a coherent article
- develop good sentence and paragraph structure
- identify and correct the most common and stylistic errors
- learn to use powerful language and to write more succinctly
- improve grammar and punctuation
- edit your work more independently
Certificate: participants must attend 6 of 7 course sessions and submit all assignments on time to receive a certificate.
Entrance requirement: to be admitted to this course, you need to score at least 70 on the Oxford Online Placement Test (click here to make an appointment) or attain an equivalent score on another international test:
- At least 6.5 on the IELTS exam
- At least grade A on the FCE exam (Cambridge)
- At least grade C on the CAE exam (Cambridge)
- At least 87 on the TOEFL exam (internet-based)
We will also accept a diploma of any English-taught Master’s programme at a Dutch university.

Course fee
1) Reduced fee: PhD candidates of Wageningen University with an approved Training and Supervision Plan (TSP) and postdocs of Wageningen University that are registered at one of the graduate schools of Wageningen (EPS, PE&RC, VLAG, WASS, WIAS, WIMEK) | € 275,- |
2) Full fee: all other PhD candidates / post-docs and staff of Wageningen University | € 550,- |
3) Extended Fee: all other participants | € 760,- |
Fee includes study and training material.
Cancellation condition:
Until 1 month before the start of the course, you can cancel free of charge. After this date you will be charged with the “Full Fee”.
Exemption of payment:
- When there is a replacement (who you can propose, in this case please inform the course coordinator) you will only be charged with €100.
- For PhD’s and post-docs of Wageningen University: when you have a valid reason (circumstances beyond your control) to cancel, you will be charged the reduced fee. In this case a written statement of the supervisor/superior is required.
Note: When you do not have a valid reason to cancel or do not show up at courses that are free of charge you will be charged with €100.
